Let me introduce myself —
I am an ostomy patient and underwent Abdominoperineal Resection (APR) surgery along with a mastectomy in 2023 at Dr. Rela Hospital, Chennai. This was the first major surgery of my life.
At 83 years old, I am a super senior citizen, but I approached the surgery with confidence and courage, trusting my team of doctors, paramedical staff, and my family. With their unwavering support, I readily accepted the procedure, and everything went smoothly.
Just two months after surgery, I started irrigation, and the hospital team was extremely supportive in guiding me through the process. Today, I manage stoma care independently and follow a regular three-month review schedule with my surgeon.
In November 2024, I attended the Ostomy India Annual Meeting in Bangalore—an inspiring experience. I even traveled alone by train from Chennai to Bangalore and back without any difficulties, proving to myself that life with an ostomy can be normal and independent.
I am happy, independent, and continuing my daily activities with confidence.
