Hello, everyone! My name is Kavita, and I’m thrilled to share a piece of my journey with you. At 56, I’m looking back on a life that has dramatically transformed since my diagnosis of stage 2 colorectal cancer at the age of 49. This August, I will be celebrating an incredible milestone—eight years since my life took a turn I never expected.
When I reflect on these years, I realize that my life with a stoma has reshaped me—not just in terms of my health, but in how I view myself and the world around me. The journey was anything but easy; there were numerous ups and downs, hurdles to overcome, and lessons to learn. Yet, here I am, living daily without pain, able to relish the activities and experiences that bring me joy. To me, this is my second life, and I’m determined to live it to the fullest.
Changing Perspectives: From Embarrassment to Empowerment
Many people view having a stoma as something to be embarrassed about. I used to think that way, too, but I’ve come to realize that it’s a lifesaver. Instead of hiding it, I now celebrate it. It has given me a second chance in life and transformed my perspective. I feel more confident in my body and more passionate than ever about promoting awareness and positivity for those with stomas or those who may face similar situations.
I’ve taken my experiences and channeled them into something meaningful. Alongside my personal journey, I provide counseling to those navigating the complexities of living with a stoma. There’s no denying that dealing with day-to-day stoma challenges can be daunting; it requires patience, understanding, and sometimes a little creativity. However, I firmly believe that awareness is the key to tackling these hurdles.
Spreading Awareness Through Blogging
One of my most rewarding endeavors has been creating a blog dedicated to raising awareness around ostomy life. Through my writing, I aim to show that living with a stoma is not just normal—it’s my normal. I want to send a message to everyone out there: don’t let your stoma stand in the way of having a fulfilling and normal life. You are not alone, and there are countless resources and communities ready to support you.
I also feel it's vital for all ostomates to prioritize a balanced lifestyle. A normal diet, regular exercise, and a positive outlook can make a world of difference in how we navigate life with a stoma. Surrounding ourselves with supportive individuals and staying informed can significantly ease the journey.
Closing Thoughts
As I approach my 8-year mark, I’m filled with gratitude for the life I’ve created after cancer. I hope my story inspires others to embrace their journeys, whatever they may entail. Remember, the challenges you face can lead to beautiful transformations. Embrace your life, celebrate your normal, and know that you have the strength to navigate any obstacle.
Thank you for taking the time to read my reflections. Here’s to raising awareness and fostering a positive community among ostomates! Let’s keep the conversation going.
With warmth and hope,
Kavita
